18:21 「惡人若回頭離開所做的一切罪惡，謹守我一切的律例，行正直與合理的事，他必定存活，不致死亡。
18:22 他所犯的一切罪過都不被記念，因所行的義，他必存活。
18:23 主耶和華說：惡人死亡，豈是我喜悅的嗎？不是喜悅他回頭離開所行的道存活嗎？
18:24 義人若轉離義行而作罪孽，照著惡人所行一切可憎的事而行，他豈能存活嗎？他所行的一切義都不被記念；他必因所犯的罪、所行的惡死亡。
18:25 「你們還說：『主的道不公平！』以色列家啊，你們當聽，我的道豈不公平嗎？你們的道豈不是不公平嗎？
18:26 義人若轉離義行而作罪孽死亡，他是因所作的罪孽死亡。
18:27 再者，惡人若回頭離開所行的惡，行正直與合理的事，他必將性命救活了。
18:28 因為他思量，回頭離開所犯的一切罪過，必定存活，不致死亡。
18:29 以色列家還說：『主的道不公平！』以色列家啊，我的道豈不公平嗎？你們的道豈不是不公平嗎？」
18:30 所以主耶和華說：「以色列家啊，我必按你們各人所行的審判你們。你們當回頭離開所犯的一切罪過。這樣，罪孽必不使你們敗亡。
18:31 你們要將所犯的一切罪過盡行拋棄，自做一個新心和新靈。以色列家啊，你們何必死亡呢？
18:32 主耶和華說：我不喜悅那死人之死，所以你們當回頭而存活。」
21 "But if a wicked person turns away
from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what
is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 None of the
transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the
righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure in the
death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn
from his way and live? 24 But when a righteous person turns away from his
righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked
person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall
be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has
committed, for them he shall die.
25 "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord
is not just. ' Hear now, O house of Israel:Is my way not just? Is it not your
ways that are not just? 26 When a righteous person turns away from his
righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that
he has done he shall die. 27 Again, when a wicked person turns away from the
wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his
life. 28 Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that
he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 Yet the house of
Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just. ' O house of Israel, are my ways
not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?
30 "Therefore I will judge you, O
house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. Repent
and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. 31 Cast away
from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a
new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have
no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and
live."

此段先知把猶大人導回正途：行善事，是本分，是應該的（正好及格）。所以沒有善果可以保留給後來行惡的自己或後代。但是上帝的憐憫願意讓改過向善的惡人可以存活，因此惡人改過可以因上帝的憐憫而不被上帝計算之前的惡。
先知說明上帝不希望惡人死亡，所以惡人要悔改，祂就留他的性命。如果知道人的希望在於上帝的憐憫與意願，而非自己的行善力量，那犯過罪的人當然要立即悔改，擁抱上帝的恩典，而非依賴不存在的「善報」。這是被擄的以色列人唯一的出路，當然也是犯過罪的人唯一的出路。
這不只是以色列人的出路，更是每一個人的出路，就是透過耶穌基督來歸向上帝，這就是悔改，我們過去遠離上帝，現在要來親近上帝，祂也正在等待我們的歸回，成為祂的兒女！
