4:1 基督既在肉身受苦，你們也當將這樣的心志作為兵器，因為在肉身受過苦的，就已經與罪斷絕了。
4:2 你們存這樣的心，從今以後就可以不從人的情慾，只從上帝的旨意在世度餘下的光陰。
4:3 因為往日隨從外邦人的心意行邪淫、惡慾、醉酒、荒宴、群飲，並可惡拜偶像的事，時候已經夠了。
Since
therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking,
for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for
the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will
of God. For the time that is past
suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality,
passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.

ki-yèn chhai ngiuk-thí su-khú, ngì-têu chhiu yin-kôi yung liá-chúng ke
sîm-chṳ chông-phi chhṳ-kâ, yîn-vi chhai ngiuk-thí-song su-ko khú ke

fap-li̍t só kim-chṳ́ ke pai ngiéu-siong.

對基督徒而言愛惜光陰和浪費光陰的標準，在於是否遵行上帝旨意。遵行上帝旨意就是贖回光陰，因為這是順從聖靈的引導，走在上帝要我們走的道路，是上帝的榮耀透過我們所言所行彰顯，是有價值、有意義，是存留在上帝那裏的。
至於隨從情慾做出違反上帝律法的事，就是犯罪，為上帝所不喜悅，更是與我們得救的身分不相稱。但是，因為我們尚在世間，仍然受肉體的情慾影響，免不了會犯罪。所以，我們要不斷向上帝認罪，求上帝給我們力量勝過！
然而使徒在此提供一個好的方式，就是面對情慾的試探時，要想到基督的受苦，因為我們犯罪的結果是帶來基督的受苦。然而基督的受苦既然勝過罪惡，我們也要忍受誘惑，情願不要有過頭的滿足，不要讓基督的名蒙羞，這就是受苦的心志。也透過這樣的心志，我們可以勇敢向罪惡與魔鬼說不！因為我們是欠基督的債，不是欠魔鬼的債。
