21:15 他們吃完了早飯，耶穌對西門•彼得說：「約翰（在馬太十六章十七節稱約拿）的兒子西門，你愛我比這些更深嗎？」彼得說：「主啊，是的，你知道我愛你。」耶穌對他說：「你餵養我的小羊。」
21:16 耶穌第二次又對他說：「約翰的兒子西門，你愛我嗎？」彼得說：「主啊，是的，你知道我愛你。」耶穌說：「你牧養我的羊。」
21:17 第三次對他說：「約翰的兒子西門，你愛我嗎？」彼得因為耶穌第三次對他說「你愛我嗎」，就憂愁，對耶穌說：「主啊，你是無所不知的；你知道我愛你。」耶穌說：「你餵養我的羊。
21:18 我實實在在地告訴你，你年少的時候，自己束上帶子，隨意往來；但年老的時候，你要伸出手來，別人要把你束上，帶你到不願意去的地方。」
21:19 （耶穌說這話是指著彼得要怎樣死，榮耀上帝。）說了這話，就對他說：「你跟從我吧！」
21:20 彼得轉過來，看見耶穌所愛的那門徒跟著，（就是在晚飯的時候，靠著耶穌胸膛說：「主啊，賣你的是誰？」的那門徒。）
21:21 彼得看見他，就問耶穌說：「主啊，這人將來如何？」
21:22 耶穌對他說：「我若要他等到我來的時候，與你何干？你跟從我吧！」
21:23 於是這話傳在弟兄中間，說那門徒不死。其實，耶穌不是說他不死，乃是說：「我若要他等到我來的時候，與你何干？」
21:24 為這些事作見證，並且記載這些事的就是這門徒；我們也知道他的見證是真的。
21:25 耶穌所行的事還有許多，若是一一地都寫出來，我想，所寫的書就是世界也容不下了。
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

約翰將主耶穌的事蹟停在呼召彼得的事上，讓人覺得主耶穌的呼召不可以忘記，這是人生最重要的事情！也就是說，成為耶穌基督的門徒是永恆的事件。雖然上帝的作為是在創世以前，是超越時空的限制，也會在時空中間發生！同樣，我們今日在時空所作的決定，也因為耶穌基督的緣故，成就到永遠！
這是基督信仰奇妙難測之處，恍若很久以前，又彷若很就以後，因為有主耶穌的同在，都成了現在！因為我們與主耶穌相遇，就是與永恆的上帝相遇，我們也感受到永恆！
也因為這樣，我們對主耶穌的愛是必要的條件，我們若沒有愛主，就不會信靠主；我們若不信靠主，就對與主永遠的同在不會盼望！若沒有盼望，生命是多麼可憐，因為沒有什麼事比絕望更可怕了！
