這是上帝報應的作為，使以色列民遭受到地震、日蝕等現象，並且使「使你們的節期變為悲哀，歌曲變為哀歌。眾人腰束麻布，頭上光禿，使這場悲哀如喪獨生子，至終如痛苦的日子一樣」。這樣的敘述，讓我們想到耶穌基督被釘十字架時的景況。
耶穌基督如同逾越節的羔羊一般，如贖罪祭一樣為萬民的罪而死，而祂在十字架家靈魂交給上帝的那一課，就發生了地震和日蝕。
所以耶穌的死表面上好像是對以色列的懲罰，其實是上帝拯救萬民的作為，使轄制人的鬼魔－－罪惡和死亡－－被上帝所勝過，使人得自由！
