One
day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three
in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being
carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg
from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter
and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter
looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So
the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
6 Then
Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by
the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles
became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then
he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising
God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they
recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate
called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened
to him.
Manasseh was twelve years old when he
became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. 2 He
did evil in the eyes of the Lord,
following the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 3 He
rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished; he also erected
altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles. He bowed down to all the starry hosts
and worshiped them. 4 He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “My Name will remain in
Jerusalem forever.” 5 In both courts of the temple of the Lord, he built altars to all the starry
hosts. 6 He sacrificed his children in the fire in the Valley
of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted
mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.
7 He
took the image he had made and put it in God’s temple, of which God had said to
David and to his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have
chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. 8 I
will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land I assigned to
your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them
concerning all the laws, decrees and regulations given through Moses.” 9 But
Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more
evil than the nations the Lord had
destroyed before the Israelites.
10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people,
but they paid no attention. 11 So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of
Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose, bound him with
bronze shackles and took him to Babylon. 12 In his distress he
sought the favor of the Lord his
God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 13 And
when he prayed to him, the Lord
was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to
Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.
14 Afterward
he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, west of the Gihon spring in the
valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate and encircling the hill of
Ophel; he also made it much higher. He stationed military commanders in all the
fortified cities in Judah.
15 He
got rid of the foreign gods and removed the image from the temple of the Lord, as well as all the altars he had
built on the temple hill and in Jerusalem; and he threw them out of the city. 16 Then
he restored the altar of the Lord
and sacrificed fellowship offerings and thank offerings on it, and told Judah
to serve the Lord, the God of
Israel. 17 The people, however, continued to sacrifice at the
high places, but only to the Lord
their God.
18 The
other events of Manasseh’s reign, including his prayer to his God and the words
the seers spoke to him in the name of the Lord,
the God of Israel, are written in the annals of the kings of Israel.[a]19 His
prayer and how God was moved by his entreaty, as well as all his sins and
unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah
poles and idols before he humbled himself—all these are written in the records
of the seers.[b]20 Manasseh
rested with his ancestors and was buried in his palace. And Amon his son
succeeded him as king.
21 Amon
was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two
years. 22 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done.
Amon worshiped and offered sacrifices to all the idols Manasseh had made. 23 But
unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble himself before the Lord; Amon increased his guilt.
24 Amon’s
officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace. 25 Then
the people of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they
made Josiah his son king in his place.
14 Then
Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:
“Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you;
listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk,
as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is
what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In
the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the
Lord. 21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[c]
22 “Fellow
Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to
you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you
yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s
deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to
death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from
the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for
death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:
“‘I
saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[e]
29 “Fellow
Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was
buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a
prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of
his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he
spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the
realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has
raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted
to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy
Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For
David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“‘The
Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[f]
36 “Therefore
let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified,
both Lord and Messiah.”
37 When
the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the
other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter
replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all
who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 With
many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves
from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his
message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that
day.
42 They
devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the
many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the
believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They
sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every
day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in
their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising
God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their
number daily those who were being saved.
