9:1 我將這一切事放在心上，詳細考究，就知道義人和智慧人，並他們的作為都在上帝手中；或是愛，或是恨，都在他們的前面，人不能知道。
9:2 凡臨到眾人的事都是一樣：義人和惡人都遭遇一樣的事；好人，潔淨人和不潔淨人，獻祭的與不獻祭的，也是一樣。好人如何，罪人也如何；起誓的如何，怕起誓的也如何。
9:3 在日光之下所行的一切事上有一件禍患，就是眾人所遭遇的都是一樣，並且世人的心充滿了惡；活著的時候心裡狂妄，後來就歸死人那裡去了。
9:4 與一切活人相連的，那人還有指望，因為活著的狗比死了的獅子更強。
9:5 活著的人知道必死；死了的人毫無所知，也不再得賞賜；他們的名無人記念。
9:6 他們的愛，他們的恨，他們的嫉妒，早都消滅了。在日光之下所行的一切事上，他們永不再有分了。
9:7 你只管去歡歡喜喜吃你的飯，心中快樂喝你的酒，因為上帝已經悅納你的作為。
9:8 你的衣服當時常潔白，你頭上也不要缺少膏油。
9:9 在你一生虛空的年日，就是上帝賜你在日光之下虛空的年日，當同你所愛的妻，快活度日，因為那是你生前在日光之下勞碌的事上所得的分。
9:10 凡你手所當做的事要盡力去做；因為在你所必去的陰間沒有工作，沒有謀算，沒有知識，也沒有智慧。
9:11 我又轉念：見日光之下，快跑的未必能贏；力戰的未必得勝；智慧的未必得糧食；明哲的未必得資財；靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。
9:12 原來人也不知道自己的定期。魚被惡網圈住，鳥被網羅捉住，禍患忽然臨到的時候，世人陷在其中也是如此。
So I reflected on all this
and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s
hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them. 2 All share
a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[a] the clean and the unclean, those who offer
sacrifices and those who do not.
As it is with the good,
so
with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so
with those who are afraid to take them.
3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same
destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and
there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the
dead. 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead
lion!
5 For the living know that they will die,
but
the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and
even their name is forgotten.
6 Their love, their hate
and
their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in
anything that happens under the sun.
7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful
heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be
clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife,
whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you
under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in
your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all
your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither
working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
11 I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift
or
the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
or
wealth to the brilliant
or
favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.
12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:
As fish are caught in a cruel
net,
or
birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times
that
fall unexpectedly upon them.

傳道者這段話語有點像佛家的思考方式：「凡臨到眾人的事都是一樣：義人和惡人都遭遇一樣的事；好人，潔淨人和不潔淨人，獻祭的與不獻祭的，也是一樣。好人如何，罪人也如何；起誓的如何，怕起誓的也如何。在日光之下所行的一切事上有一件禍患，就是眾人所遭遇的都是一樣。」「見日光之下，快跑的未必能贏；力戰的未必得勝；智慧的未必得糧食；明哲的未必得資財；靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。原來人也不知道自己的定期。魚被惡網圈住，鳥被網羅捉住，禍患忽然臨到的時候，世人陷在其中也是如此。」
人的確是要面對到各樣不可確定的變數，甚至於這一刻好好，下一刻怎樣都不知道，在這樣感覺「無常」，有時不知如何面對！即使事瞭悟生死的大師，也是無法敵過「無常」的命運！
但是基督徒知道上帝仍然在掌權，我們無時無刻不是活在上帝的權能之中，世事雖然是「無常」。但是，基督徒相信：這個「無常」狀態，有一天會過去，只有上帝的國事永不震動與安定的，而這個安定的國使我們面對無常時，內心仍然安定！正如約翰福音中說到：「我將這些事告訴你們，是要叫你們在我裡面有平安。在世上，你們有苦難；但你們可以放心，我已經勝了世界。」（16:33）
